Chlamydia Treatment Questions and Answers

Q: What is chlamydia?

A: Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI). It’s caused by bacteria and mostly affects young women, but can occur in men and older women, and can also affect the rectum. It can be hard to tell whether you have it, as many people don’t show signs or symptoms, but some common ones are genital pain and discharge. Even when symptoms occur, they can be mild, making them easy to overlook. Signs and symptoms can be:

  • Painful urination
  • Vaginal or penile discharge
  • Painful sexual intercourse, or bleeding after sex and between periods in women
  • Testicular pain in men
  • Rectal pain, discharge, or bleeding

Q: What should I do about chlamydia?

A: You definitely should have the condition treated, as it can spread to sexual partners or lead to significant and even serious health problems, like damage to the reproductive system. Go see a doctor, like an urgent care doctor, if you have any of the signs or symptoms or if you learn your sexual partner has chlamydia. Also, try to help your sexual partner understand that they need to be treated too if you have chlamydia, even if they don’t have signs or symptoms. The condition is very easy to address, especially when you go to urgent care!

The diagnosis procedure is very simple and discreet, so it’s nothing to worry about, and the treatment is typically a simple antibiotic, so it’s nothing to worry about either! Often, just a one-time dose of an antibiotic is necessary for treatment. Sometimes, it’s necessary to take the medication daily for a while or multiple times a day for a week or so. It’s necessary to be treated for chlamydia if you’ve had it in the past and have it again, even if you were treated.

Q: How do you know if chlamydia is gone?

A: In most cases, the infection goes away within a week or two, and during this time, it’s important to avoid sex to prevent spreading the condition. Just as it’s important to get professional testing and treatment for chlamydia, it’s also important to get tested to make sure the condition is cured, so go see the doctor again for testing. This is especially important if you’re unsure your sexual partner got treatment. Testing should still happen even if your partner was treated.

When you come see us here at Chai Urgent Care, we’ll test and treat you then ask you to come back for a retest after a while. Please remember it’s important to get tested and treated for a condition like chlamydia, not just to prevent spreading it, but also to protect yourself from serious complications.
