What is Lyme disease?
This disease is caused by bacteria, and black-legged ticks (deer ticks) are common carriers of this bacteria. You can get Lyme disease if you live or spend a lot of time in grassy or heavily wooded areas, as ticks carrying Lyme disease can thrive in these areas. It can be difficult to tell whether you have Lyme disease, but an urgent care clinic like ours can determine this for you. You can, however, look for certain signs and symptoms yourself.
What are the signs of Lyme disease?
Signs and symptoms can vary, they may appear after a month, and they might appear in stages. The early signs and symptoms of Lyme disease tend to be small red bumps on the skin, followed by a rash and possibly other symptoms like fever, chills, fatigue, body aches, headache, a stiff neck, and/or swollen lymph nodes. The late signs and symptoms can be an expanding rash, joint pain, and even some neurological problems.
If you’ve been bitten by a tick and are having any of the issues above, then you should go see an urgent care doctor. One of these professionals will be able to treat you right away which is important because treatment for Lyme disease is more effective if it’s begun early, and the symptoms you experience can worsen. Conditions like arthritis and nervous system problems can occur too. Even if your symptoms go away, it’s still important to seek care, as the absence of symptoms doesn’t mean the disease is gone.
How is Lyme disease diagnosed?
There are a couple of tests that can help with Lyme disease diagnosis. One is the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay test, and the other is the Western blot test. If you require testing for Lyme disease, you’ll likely be referred for these tests. As for treatment, it’s really important that you receive it if you have Lyme disease.
What is the treatment for Lyme disease?
The sooner you seek testing and treatment for Lyme disease, the better, as this can prevent the symptoms from getting worse, and your recovery will be quicker and more complete. Since Lyme disease is caused by bacteria, antibiotics are used to treat it. For early-stage Lyme disease, oral antibiotics are often enough to treat a patient. However, oral antibiotics may not be enough for Lyme disease involving the central nervous system, so in this case, intravenous antibiotics might be necessary. Antibiotics are the only treatment that’s proven for Lyme disease. We can provide any antibiotics you may need here at Chai Urgent Care.
