In 2018, 2,457,118 total cases of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) were reported in the United States. Because of the high prevalence of STDs in the U.S., the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has announced that we are currently facing an epidemic, making it more important than ever before to get tested. If you’re sexually active, be sure to see one of Chai Urgent Care’s highly trained staff members for regular STD testing and treatment to protect your health.
Common STDs and Treatments in NJ & NY
Out of the over 2,000,000 STD cases reported last year, the CDC reported that 1,758,668 were cases of Chlamydia, 583,405 were cases of gonorrhea, and 115,045 were cases of syphilis.
Chlamydia, the most common STD in the US, can cause one or more of the following symptoms:
- Genital discharge
- Burning or otherwise painful urination
- Testicular swelling
- Spotting between periods
Thankfully, although it’s the most prevalent STD, Chlamydia is one of the simplest conditions to treat. At our clinic, you and your partner(s) could be prescribed one of several antibiotics to have the infection cleared up in one to two weeks.
Gonorrhea has a longer symptom list than Chlamydia, and can even be asymptomatic, but is also treatable with an antibiotic regimen. Its most common symptoms include:
- Genital pain or soreness
- Increased urination frequency
- Sore throat
- Lower abdominal pain in women
- Heavier periods or spotting
Finally, syphilis develops in three distinct stages. In the first stage, patients may develop painless sores known as chancres. In the second stage, more symptoms may start to develop, such as a non-itchy rash, wart-like genital sores, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and more. In the last, or tertiary, stage, patients may experience damage to the heart, blood vessels, bones and joints, and liver. They may also develop gummas or swelling in the soft tissues of their bodies. It is even possible for syphilis to spread to a patient’s nervous system, potentially causing irreversible neurological damage.
The treatment plan for syphilis varies based on the stage you are in. In the majority of cases, however, penicillin is the drug of choice for treating this STD. Come see our knowledgeable staff today for help with whatever symptoms you’re experiencing.
